Antidote to Dystopia - June 2022
Let's change the future, sweet tea!
I can imagine a lot of us are feeling overwhelmed and helpless right now. The immediate antidote to this (in my humble opinion) is spending time in nature, whether it's standing thigh deep in the sea, enjoying your local park or woodland, or even sticking your head out of the window. But for the long term? Well... let's talk about the most important thing we can do to change the trajectory of our dystopian future: improving the voting system. But first, take a deep breath and look how cute my dog is!
Please bare with me as I get political- but this is seriously important no matter where you live or what your political beliefs are! We all deserve a voting system that actually represents our opinions. In the UK and US, the parties in power were not actually voted in by the majority... check out the results from the 2019 election, or the 2016 election as two examples. More people voted against the parties that got into power... but because we have a voting system that isn't proportional, those are the parties that won the elections. Learn more about why our voting system isn't fair here ⤵️

I was a speaker at the Disability Union Disability & Democracy webinar this month, sharing my experiences as a disabled councillor with other disability advocates and members of parliament (MPs). Subsequently, I was featured in this article by The Disability News Service! I am hopeful that the terrible laws being made right now are not the end of human rights, but the tipping point for creating a much better government.

June Favourites
☀️ Good News: I read a book! In one day! A physical book! This is huge news for me because since my seizures started I have been unable to read books. I love audiobooks but I missed reading physically a lot! So it was wonderful to curl up and consume a beautiful story. Also Peanut Butter Vegan Ice Cream. Thanks to Lidl's flavour of the week, I may never experience its deliciousness again... alas.
🎶 Music: People Watching (and every other song) from Conan Gray's new album Superache
📚 Book: We Were Liars by E Lockhart is an exquisitely written fast paced love story with a twist! I also really enjoyed The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo! A must-read, in my opinion. Follow me on Storygraph here! (A way better version of Good Reads)
📺 TV: This is Going to Hurt is an informative, humourous, and heartbreaking show about life as a junior doctor in the NHS (based on a true story)
🍿Movie: Gifted made me cry, watch the trailer here but as always don't watch the whole trailer if you actually wanna watch the movie!
🍜 Food: Sushi, sushi, and sushi. I have made a lot of sushi this month and I can recommend hoisin sauce with lettuce cucumber and spring onion as a refreshing vegan sushi recipe!
Thank you for all the replies to my last newsletter, I look forward to hearing how your July has been!
