Hello sweet teas!
It’s been a rough month for me hospital-appointment-wise. I feel like I have seen so many doctors over the last decade and yet not one has been willing to give me the proper medical attention I need. I am still waiting. In this weird purgatory of ‘beyond my medical expertise’, in this stranger’s body that I can’t control. It’s difficult to deal with but I know I am not alone. In making tiktoks and reels to cope and process my experiences, I have been utterly overwhelmed by the responses from people who are in similar situations. The internet can be an incredible place… except for those comments where someone is telling me that disabled people dying from covid is ‘natural selection’… Here is an excerpt from my recent blog post about COP26 that talks about the disabled minister, Karine Ellharer, who was excluded from the conference due to inaccessibility.
It is not just disabled people who have been left out of COP26, but the people who are right now, as you read this, being impacted the most by climate change. Indigenous people, frontline activists, and vulnerable communities have not been given a platform.
We cannot isolate these issues into accessibility and sustainability, the issue is exclusivity and an all round lack of compassion. Exclusivity not only in attendance, but in the attitude that world leaders are not responsible for those who are suffering from climate change right now. Lack of compassion not only towards vulnerable communities, but towards the earth.
You can read the full blog post here! It features lots of ideas for how we can individually and collaboratively help the planet.
Despite my best efforts, I have not been well enough to publish as many YouTube videos as I would like to. My new role as District Councillor is taking up a lot of time, and I am so excited for the responsibility, but also keenly aware of how I am not a ‘standard’ councillor, and there are difficulties within that. However, I have managed to make a few videos, and if you would like to watch them and subscribe I would really appreciate the support!
